I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Allah the Exalted said, 'I am ar-Rahman, and this is the rahim. I derived its name from My own name. Whoever maintains it, I will maintain ties with him, and whoever severs it, I will sever ties with him.'"
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: قال الله تعالى: أنا الرحمن وهي الرحم، شققت لها من اسمي، من وصلها وصلته، ومن قطعها بتته.
Abu Dawud (1694) narrated it from Musaddad and Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who both said, Sufyan told us, from Zuhri, from Abu Salama, from Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and he related it. Tirmidhi (1907) narrated it through another route from Sufyan, with his chain, that Abdul-Rahman bin Awf visited Abu Radad and said, meaning Abdul-Rahman, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, and he related something similar.Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Sufyan, from Zuhri, is a sahih hadith. Maamar narrated this hadith from Zuhri, from Abu Salama, from Raddad Laythi, from Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. This is how Maamar relates it. Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said, the hadith of Maamar is a mistake." End of quote.I say, the hadith of Maamar is what Abdul-Razzaq (20234) narrated, and from him Abu Dawud, Imam Ahmad (1680), and Hakim (4/157), from Zuhri, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman told me, that Raddad Laythi informed him, from Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and he related the same. As for "Raddad Laythi," the correct name is Abu Raddad. So Maamar inserted, between Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf and his father Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, a man named Raddad Laythi. Now this Raddad Laythi had no one narrating from him except Abu Salama. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "Thiqat," but the hadith has another chain that makes no mention of Abu Raddad, which is what Imam Ahmad (1659), Abu Yaala (841), and Hakim (4/157) all narrated through the route of Yazid bin Harun, who said, Hisham Dastawai informed us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Qariz, that his father told him that he entered upon Abdul-Rahman bin Awf while he was ill, and Abdul-Rahman said to him, "May the bond of kinship that has brought you to visit unite you with mercy. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Allah said, "I am Rahman. I created the bond of kinship (rahm) and derived for it a name from my own name. Whoever maintains it, I maintain bonds with him, and whoever severs it, I sever bonds with him and cut him off,"' or he said, 'whoever cuts it off, I cut him off.'"Hafiz pointed to the chain of Abu Yaala and said, "Abu Yaala narrated it with a sahih chain through the route of Abdullah bin Qariz, from Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, without mentioning Abu Raddad in it." See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (3/271).Regarding Abdullah bin Qariz, there is considerable disagreement about his name. Hafiz mentioned this in the biography of Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Qariz, saying, "He is also said to be Abdullah bin Ibrahim bin Qariz," and he said, "Ibn Abu Hatim treated Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Qariz and Abdullah bin Ibrahim bin Qariz as two different men, but the truth is that they are one and the same, and the disagreement traces back to Zuhri and others." Ibn Main said, "Zuhri used to make mistakes regarding him." He then went on to mention some of the discrepancies.I say, whichever version is correct, this narrator is corroborated in the earlier chain through the route of Raddad Laythi, and moreover the hadith is sahih even without him.Ibn Manda said in his book Tawhid (2/47), "This report indicates that all of Allah's
actions are derived from His names, unlike the created being, such as the provider, the creator, the resurrector, the giver, and the like, whose names come after their actions, in the sense that one creates, provides, resurrects, gives, gives life, and causes death, whereas the names of the created being are derived from their actions." End of quote.
