We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a Bedouin man came in wearing a sijan cloak buttoned with silk brocade. He said, "This companion of yours has degraded every knight, son of a knight! He wants to bring down every knight, son of a knight, and elevate every shepherd, son of a shepherd."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then took hold of the front of the man's cloak and said, "Do I not see upon you the dress of one who has no sense?"Then he said, "When Allah's prophet Nuh ﷺ was nearing death, he said to his son, 'I am giving you my final counsel. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with la ilaha illa Allah, for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one scale and la ilaha illa Allah were placed on the other, la ilaha illa Allah would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed ring, la ilaha illa Allah would shatter them. And subhan Allah wa bihamdihi, for it is the prayer of every created thing, and through it creation is given sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk and from arrogance.'"I said, or someone said, "Messenger of Allah, this shirk we know, but what is arrogance? Is it that one of us has a fine pair of sandals with fine straps?"He replied, "No."The questioner asked, "Is it that one of us has a fine garment to wear?"He replied, "No."The questioner asked, "Is arrogance that one of us has a riding animal to mount?"He replied, "No."The questioner asked, "Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him?"He replied, "No."It was asked, "Messenger of Allah, then what is arrogance?"He answered, "Belittling the truth and looking down on people."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (6583) from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Saqab bin Zuhayr, from Zayd bin Aslam. Hammad said, I think it is from Ata bin Yasar, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he then related the hadith. This uncertainty on the part of Hammad bin Zayd does not affect the soundness of the hadith, because Imam Ahmad also narrated it (7101) through another route without the uncertainty, saying, Wahb bin Jareer narrated to us, my father narrated to us, I heard Saqab bin Zuhayr relating from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he related it.Bazzar narrated it through this same route in Kashf Astar (2998) in abridged form, but he also narrated it (3069) at length through another route, except that he placed it in the musnad of Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab, saying, Ibrahim bin Saeed Jawhari narrated to us, Abu Muawiya Darir narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Amr bin Dinar, from Abdullah bin Umar, who said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and he then related the hadith in full.Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it from Amr, from Ibn Umar, except Ibn Ishaq, and we do not know of anyone who related it from Abu Muawiya except Ibrahim bin Saeed."I say, the people of knowledge have determined that this hadith belongs to the musnad of Abdullah bin Amr, and that whoever placed it in the musnad of Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab erred. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Saqab bin Zuhayr was deemed reliable by Abu Zura, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat.
