We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nine, or eight, or seven of us, when he said, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"We had only recently given him our pledge, so we said, "We have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah."Then he said again, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"We said, "We have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah."Then he said a third time, "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?"So we stretched out our hands and said, "We have already pledged to you, Messenger of Allah. On what shall we pledge?"He said, "That you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, that you observe the five prayers, that you obey," and he whispered a word quietly, "and that you ask people for nothing."I later saw some of those men drop a whip from their hand and not ask anyone to hand it to them.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on zakat (1043) through several routes from Marwan (who is Ibn Muhammad Dimashqi), who said, Saeed (who is Ibn Abdul-Aziz) narrated to us, from Rabia bin Yazid, from Abu Idris Khawlani, from Abu Muslim Khawlani, who said, "The beloved and trustworthy one told me, as for him, he is beloved to me, and as for him, in my view he is trustworthy, Awf bin Malik Ashjai," and he then related the hadith.
