Ibn Majah narrated it (936). He said, Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba narrated to us, he said, Ismail bin Ibrahim narrated to us, from Khalid Haddan, from Abu Qilaba, from Abu Malih, and he mentioned the hadith. It is also in Musannaf Ibn Abu Shayba (2/234), where he also narrated it from Hushaym, from Khalid, from him, with the same wording, though he was uncertain whether that occurred in the year of Hudaybiya or the year of Hunayn.Abu Dawud narrated it (1059) via Sufyan bin Habib, who said, "He informed us," from Khalid Haddan, with the same wording, without any doubt that it was at the time of Hudaybiya, on a Friday. Nawawi and others graded this chain sahih. See Khulasa (2273).His saying "khabbarana" is in the active voice, meaning "he narrated to us," and whoever vocalizes it in the passive voice has erred, because then the chain would be disconnected. Hakim graded this chain sahih in Mustadrak (1/293).Shuba narrated it, from Qatada, from Abu Malih, from him, that this occurred on the day of Hunayn. Abu Dawud, Nasai (854), and Imam Ahmad (20702) narrated it through several chains from him, and he also narrated it via Hammam (that is, Ibn Yahya Awdhi) (20700), from Qatada, with the same wording, and Ibn Khuzayma also narrated it through this chain (1658) in his Sahih.Qatada, although he was a mudallis, Shuba's narration from him removes the suspicion of tadlis, due to his well-known statement, "I have spared you the tadlis of three, Amash, Qatada, and Abu Ishaq."Through these chains it is established as sahih that this occurred on the day of Hunayn, and certainty is not removed by doubt, just as it is stated explicitly in some narrations that it was on a Friday. But it is not clear to me whether that was for the Friday prayer itself or for one of the other prayers on that Friday, though my inclination is that the incident occurred at the time of the Friday prayer.But this is complicated by what Ibn Khuzayma narrated (1657) via Muammal bin Hisham and Ziyad bin Ayub, both from Ismail (that is, Ibn Ulaya), from Khalid Haddan, from Abu Qilaba, from Abu Malih, who said, "I went out on a dark night to the masjid for the Isha prayer. When I returned, I asked to enter, and my father said, 'Who is this?' They said, 'Abu Malih.' He said, 'I have seen us with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of Hudaybiya, when rain fell upon us that did not even wet the bottoms of our sandals, yet the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "Pray in your dwellings."'"Ahmad also narrated it (20704) from Abdul-Razzaq, [who said] Sufyan informed us, from Khalid, with the same wording. If this is sahih, then it can be understood as referring to two separate incidents, one on the day of Hudaybiya and one on the day of Hunayn. Some scholars held the view that it occurred on the day of Hunayn, based on the hadith of Hasan from Samura that follows.What supports that this was on a Friday is what Ibn Abbas mentioned from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said on a Friday that was a rainy day, "Pray in your dwellings." Ibn Majah narrated it (938), and it contains Abbad bin Mansur, who is daif.Abu Dawud made a chapter heading, "Chapter on the Friday prayer on a rainy day," and included in it the hadith of Abu Malih from his father.Abu Malih, his name was Amir bin Usama, and it is also said Zayd bin Usama, and it is also said Usama bin Amir, and it is also said Umayr bin Usama Hudhali, a Basran. Bukhari and Muslim both relied on his hadith as evidence, and his father was a companion. It is said that no one narrated from him except his son Abu Malih. This is what Munziri stated.
