I was present with the Prophet ﷺ during his Hajj, and I prayed the dawn prayer with him in the Mosque of Khayf. When he finished his prayer and turned around, he saw two men at the back of the gathering who had not prayed with him. He said, "Bring them to me."They were brought forward trembling. He asked, "What kept you from praying with us?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we had already prayed in our camp."He said, "Do not do that. If you have prayed in your camp and then come to a congregational mosque, pray with them, for it will count as a voluntary prayer for you."
Reported by Abu Dawud (575), Tirmidhi (219), and Nasai (858), all of them through routes from Yaala bin Ata, from Jabir bin Yazid, with the same wording. Tirmidhi said, hasan sahih, and Nawawi confirmed this in Khulasa (2306). Ibn Khuzayma also graded it sahih (1279), as did Ibn Hibban (2395, 1565), both narrating it through the route of Yaala bin Ata. The Hafiz mentioned in Talkhis (29/2) that Ibn Sakan had also graded it sahih, then he said, Shafii said in his earlier work, its chain of transmission is unknown. Bayhaqi said, this is because Yazid bin Aswad has no narrator from him other than his son, who is Jabir, and Jabir has no narrator from him other than Yaala. However, the Hafiz dismissed this criticism, saying, Yaala bin Ata is among the narrators of Muslim, and Jabir was deemed reliable by Nasai and others. We have found for Jabir bin Yazid a narrator other than Yaala. Ibn Manda extracted this in Marifa through the route of Baqiyya, from Ibrahim bin Dhi Himaya, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Jabir. End of quote.I say, Baqiyya is Ibn Walid, known for concealing weaknesses in transmission (tadlis), but he explicitly stated that he heard directly in the narration of Daraqutni (412/1) from Ibrahim. This hadith has then been transmitted through multiple independent chains from Yaala bin Ata. Hakim said, Shuba, Hisham bin Hassan, Ghaylan bin Jami, Abu Khalid Dalani, Abu Awana, Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, Mubarak bin Fadala, Sharik bin Abdullah, and others all narrated from him, and Muslim relied on Yaala bin Ata as evidence. End of quote. It appears from this that Abdul-Malik bin Umayr narrated once directly from Jabir, and once from Yaala bin Ata, from Jabir. This Abdul-Malik was accused of confusion in his narrations due to his advanced age, since he lived one hundred and three years. The two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) included narrations from him, relying on the narrations of the earlier narrators from him as primary evidence, and on the narrations of some of the later narrators from him as corroborating support.
