An Arabi came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "Messenger of Allah, what are the major sins?"He replied, "Associating partners with Allah."The man asked, "Then what?"He said, "Disobedience to one's parents."The man asked, "Then what?"He said, "The false oath that plunges one into sin."I asked, "What is the false oath that plunges one into sin?"He answered, "The one by which a person seizes the wealth of a Muslim while lying in it."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Dealing with Apostates (6920), from Muhammad bin Husayn bin Ibrahim, who said, Ubaydullah told us, Shayban told us, from Firas, from Shaybi, from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, who said, and then he mentioned it.He also narrated it in the Book of Oaths and Vows (6675) through another route, from Shubah, who said, Firas narrated to us with his chain, adding in it, "and killing a soul."The false oath is called ghamus (immersing) because it immerses the one who takes it in sin, and then in the Fire.
