The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let those of maturity and understanding stand directly behind me, then those who come after them," repeating it three times, "and beware of the clamor of the marketplaces."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: ليليني منكم أولو الأحلام والنهى، ثم الذين يلونهم- ثلاثا- وإياكم وهيشات الأسواق.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Prayer (433/123) through Abu Mashar, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, from Abdullah bin Masud, who related the hadith."The commotion of the marketplaces" refers to the noise, raised voices, and disturbances that occur there. It derives from "hawsh," meaning intermixing. It is said, "the people became mutahawish," when they mix together and intrude upon one another, and "there is tahawush among them," meaning mixing and disagreement. This was noted by Khattabi.The hadith of Abu Masud has already come earlier in the chapter on straightening the rows, and it is found in Muslim.
