I have never prayed behind any imam whose prayer was lighter or more complete than that of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If he heard a child crying, he would shorten the prayer for fear of distressing the mother.
ما صليت وراء إمام قط أخف صلاة، ولا أتم صلاة من رسول الله ﷺ، وإن كان يسمع بكاء الصبي فيخفف مخافة أن تفتن أمه.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on adhan (708) from Khalid bin Mukhlad, who said, Sulayman bin Bilal told us, who said, Sharik bin Abdullah (Ibn Abu Nimr) told us, who said, I heard Anas bin Malik, and then he related it.Muslim narrated it in the chapter on prayer (190/469) through several routes from Ismail bin Jafar, from Sharik bin Abdullah, but he shortened it up to his words, "and none of them offer a more complete prayer than the Messenger of Allah," without mentioning the child's crying.Then both of them agreed in narrating it through the route of Yazid bin Zuray, who said, Saeed bin Abu Aruba told us, who said, Qatada told us that Anas bin Malik related to him that the Prophet said, "I enter the prayer intending to prolong it, but then I hear a child crying, so I shorten my prayer because I know how distressed his mother becomes on account of his crying."Bukhari narrated it from Ali bin Abdullah (709), and Muslim (192/470) from Muhammad bin Minhal Darir, both of them from Yazid bin Zuray.
