Ibn Majah (971) reported it, saying, Muhammad bin Umar bin Hayaj told us, saying, Yahya bin Abdul-Rahman Arhabi told us, saying, Ubayda bin Aswad told us, from Qasim bin Walid, from Minhal bin Amr, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned the hadith. Its isnad is hasan, for Ubayda bin Aswad, that is Ibn Saeed Hamdani, Abu Hatim said of him, "There is no problem with his hadith." As for what Ibn Hibban said in al-Thiqat (8/437), "His hadith is to be considered when he narrates, and where the hearing is made clear in his narration, while both those above and below him are trustworthy," this contains an indication that he was a mudallis. This is why Ibn Hajar listed him in Tarif Ahl al-Taqdis (no. 86) in the third rank of the mudallisin, those who engaged extensively in tadlis, so the imams did not rely on their hadiths except where they explicitly stated hearing them directly, and some scholars rejected their hadiths outright, while others accepted them.The correct finding is that Ubayda bin Aswad was not known for tadlis, which is why Dhahabi, Halabi, and Alai did not list him among the mudallisin, and no one before Ibn Hibban described him with tadlis. Moreover, Ibn Hibban himself graded this hadith sahih, including it in his Sahih (1757) via Hasan bin Sufyan, Abu Kurayb told us, saying, Yahya bin Abdul-Rahman Arhabi told us, from Ubayda bin Aswad, with the same wording.Busiri also graded this isnad sahih in Zawaid bin Majah, saying, "Its isnad is sahih and its narrators are trustworthy." Also in the isnad is Yahya bin Abdul-Rahman Arhabi, of whom Abu Hatim said, "A shaykh in whose hadith I see nothing objectionable," and Daraqutni said, "Sound, to be relied upon," and Ibn Hibban listed him in al-Thiqat.
