He served as the imam of Banu Khatmah during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was blind, and he went on military expeditions with him while blind.

Narrated by Abu Naeem in Marifat al-Sahaba (4392) and Ibn Qani (2/99), both by way of Jareer, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Abdullah bin Umayr, who related it.Ibn Hajar said in Al-Isaba (2/354), "Hasan bin Sufyan and Baghawi narrated by way of Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Abdullah bin Umayr, that he was the imam of Banu Khatma, and he was blind, in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He also fought alongside the Prophet ﷺ while blind. Its narrators are trustworthy, but Ibn Manda said, 'Jareer was not corroborated in this.' And Abu Muawiya said, 'From Hisham, from his father, from Adi bin Umayr, from his father, that he had companionship with the Prophet, and he used to lead his people in prayer while blind.'"And he said, in the entry on Umayr bin Adi (6073), "It is possible that he [meaning Umayr bin Adi] died during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, and his son [meaning Abdullah] took his place."
