Daraqutni (2/88) narrated it from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ziyad, who said, Muhammad bin Ghalib told us, Zakariya bin Yahya Wasiti, known as Zahmawayh, told us, Ziyad bin Abdullah bin Tufayl told us, from Amash, from Ibrahim, from Hammam, from Abu Masud Ansari, and he mentioned it in similar fashion. Daraqutni said, No one narrated it except Ziyad Bakkaa, and as far as we know no one narrated it except Hammam. End of quote.I say, its chain is hasan, on account of Ziyad Bakkaa, for he is hasan al-hadith. Hakim (1/210) narrated it through this same route. As for Daraqutni's statement that no one narrated it except Ziyad Bakkaa, he meant this specific wording, for otherwise it was narrated in meaning by Abu Dawud (597) and by Hakim, and from him Bayhaqi (3/108), from Yaala bin Ubayd, who said, Amash told us, from Ibrahim, from Hammam, that Huzaifa led the people in prayer at Madain while standing on a raised platform. Abu Masud took hold of his shirt and pulled it. When Huzaifa finished his prayer, he said, "Did you not know that this was forbidden?" He replied, "Yes indeed, I remembered as soon as you pulled me."Ibn Khuzayma narrated it in his Sahih (1523) from Shafii, and it is also found in al-Umm (1/152), from Sufyan, from Amash, with the same chain, and in it Abu Masud said, "Has this not been forbidden?" Huzaifa said to him, "Did you not see that I complied with you right away?" Hakim said, It is sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs, though they did not include it in their collections.I say, it is as he said. This shows that Huzaifa too was among those who knew the marfu hadith on this matter. His statement, "Did you not know that this was forbidden," carries the status of a marfu report, since the one who forbids in such matters can only be the Lawgiver. As for what was reported concerning Ammar bin Yasir, that he once stood on a raised platform to lead the prayer while the people stood below him, Huzaifa came forward and took hold of his hands, and Ammar followed him down until Huzaifa brought him down to the ground. When Ammar finished his prayer, Huzaifa said to him, "Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'When a man leads people in prayer, he should not stand in a place higher than theirs,'" or words to that effect. Ammar said, "That is why I followed you when you took hold of my hands." This is a daif hadith.Abu Dawud (598) narrated it from Ahmad bin Ibrahim, who said, Hajjaj told us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said, Abu Khalid informed me, from Adi bin Thabit Ansari, who said, a man told me that he was with Ammar bin Yasir at Madain, and when the call to prayer was given, Ammar stepped forward, and he mentioned the hadith. In it there is an unnamed man, and as for Abu Khalid, Dhahabi said, I take him to be Dalani, otherwise he is unknown. See Kashif (3/290).As for Wasiti, there is disagreement about him. Abu Hatim regarded him as reliable. Ibn Main and Ahmad said, There is no harm in him. Ibn Saad criticized him, saying, He is munkar al-hadith. Ibn Hibban said, He erred frequently and made gross mistakes, contradicting reliable narrators in his reports, so much so that when a beginner in this field hears them, he recognizes that they are fabricated or reversed. It is not permissible to rely on him even when he agrees with reliable narrators, let alone when he alone transmits difficult reports. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib (12/82) and Majruhin (1183).I say, this is the same Dalani, and if it is not him, then he is another man whom Dhahabi judged to be unknown.
