The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell unconscious during his illness, then regained consciousness and asked, "Has the time for prayer come?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Then he fell unconscious again. When he came to, he asked, "Has the time for prayer come?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Then he fell unconscious again. When he came to, he asked, "Has the time for prayer come?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "My father is a tender-hearted man. Whenever he stands in that place, he weeps and cannot manage. If only you would order someone else."Then he fell unconscious again. When he came to, he said, "Tell Bilal to call the adhan, and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You are indeed the companions of Yusuf," or "the women companions of Yusuf."So Bilal was ordered and he called the adhan, and Abu Bakr was ordered and he led the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief and said, "Find someone for me to lean on."Barirah and another man came, and he leaned on them. When Abu Bakr saw him, he started to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to stay in his place. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat down beside Abu Bakr until Abu Bakr completed his prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.
Ibn Majah (1234) and Tirmidhi in Shamail (379) both narrated it from Nasr bin Ali Jahdami, who said, Abdullah bin Dawud narrated to us, who said, Salama bin Nubayt narrated to us, from Naeem bin Abu Hind, from Nubayt bin Sharit, from Salim bin Ubayd, and he mentioned something similar. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Busiri said in Zawaid bin Majah (438), "Its narrators are trustworthy." I say, it is as he said, for Ibn Khuzayma also graded it sahih, reporting it in his Sahih (1541, 1624) through several routes from Abdullah bin Dawud with the same wording.Salim bin Ubayd is Ashjai, one of the people of Suffah, and the one narrating from him, Nubayt bin Sharit, was one of the younger companions.
