The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lead us in prayer, then turn away on either side, sometimes to his right and sometimes to his left.
كان رسول الله ﷺ يؤمنا، فينصرف على جانبيه جميعا على يمينه وعلى شماله.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (1041), Tirmidhi (301), and Ibn Majah (929), all through the route of Simak bin Harb, from Qabisa bin Hilb, from his father, who related it. The wording given is that of Tirmidhi. Tirmidhi said, this is a hasan hadith.I say, it is as he said, for Qabisa bin Hilb was only deemed reliable by Ajli and Ibn Hibban, and a narrator like him has his hadith graded hasan. Nawawi also graded it hasan in Al-Majmu (3/490), as did Ibn Abdul-Barr in Al-Istiab, as Shawkani mentioned in Nayl (2/356). As for those who accused him of being unknown, this was because no one narrated from him except Simak bin Harb. But once he is deemed reliable, the charge of being unknown no longer applies to him, and his hadith has established foundations that strengthen it.
