I said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed I can hold to and practice."He replied, "Hold fast to prostration, for you do not make a single prostration to Allah without Allah raising you a degree by it and erasing a sin from you because of it."
قلت يا رسول الله: أخبرني بعمل أستقيم عليه وأعمله. قال: عليك بالسجود، فإنك لا تسجد لله سجدة إلا رفعك الله درجة، وحط بها عنك خطيئة.
Ibn Majah (1422) narrated it from Hisham bin Ammar and Abdul-Rahman bin Ibrahim, the two Damascenes, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, he said, Abdul-Rahman bin Thabit bin Thawban told us, from his father, from Makhul, from Kathir bin Mura, that Abu Fatimah said, then he related the hadith. Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but here he explicitly stated that he heard it directly. Abdul-Rahman bin Thabit is disputed among the critics, and the conclusion is that his hadith is hasan, except for what he narrates in support of his own doctrine on qadar, and they criticized hadiths he narrates from his father from Makhul. Ibn Adi said, "He has sound hadiths, and he was a righteous man, and his hadith is written down despite his weakness, and his father is trustworthy."The hadith is also found in Musnad Imam Ahmad (15527) by way of Ibn Lahia, who said, Harith bin Yazid told us, from Kathir the Lame, Sadafi, who said, I heard Abu Fatimah, while he was with us at Dhul-Awari, saying, then he related the hadith. There is well-known discussion concerning Ibn Lahia, but in some chains he is narrated from by Abdullah bin Mubarak, as in his Zuhd (1296), as well as by Abdullah bin Yazid Muqri and Qutayba bin Saeed, and these men's hearing from him was in his earlier period. Kathir the Lame, Sadafi, is unknown, but what is preserved is that the hadith comes from the narration of Kathir bin Mura, as Mizzi and others have said. The hadith has other chains besides the one I have mentioned, but the one I mentioned is the soundest of them.
