I saw the Prophet ﷺ when he prostrated, with his hands close to his ears.
رأيت النبي ﷺ حين سجد ويديه قريبا من أذنيه.
Ibn Abu Shayba (1/260) and Abdul-Razzaq (2948) both narrated it through the route of Sufyan Thawri, from Asim bin Kulayb, from his father, from Waail bin Hajar, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Asim bin Kulayb, and the hadith is part of the long hadith describing the manner of the Prophet's ﷺ prayer. Its sourcing was already covered in the chapter on raising the hands, and in the chapter on placing the right hand over the left. His statement, "and his hands close to his ears," is as it appears in the original, and what is meant is the placing of his hands.
