He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, Satan has come between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing them for me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "That is a devil called Khinzab. When you sense him, seek refuge in Allah from him and spit lightly to your left three times."He said, "I did that, and Allah drove him away from me."
أنه أتى النبي ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله إن الشيطان قد حال بيني وبين صلاتي وقراءتي يلبسها علي. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: ذاك شيطان يقال له خنزب، فإذا أحسسته فتعوذ بالله منه واتفل على يسارك ثلاثا. قال: ففعلت ذلك فأذهبه الله عني.
Muslim reported it in As-Salam (2203) from Yahya bin Khalaf Bahili, from Abdul-Ala, from Saeed Jareeri, from Abu Ala (Yazid bin Abdullah bin Shakhir), that Uthman bin Abu As came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he related it.Salim bin Nuh also reported it from Jareeri but did not mention "three times," and an addition from a trustworthy narrator is accepted. Abu Usama also followed Abdul-Ala in mentioning the three.Sufyan also reported it from Saeed Jareiri, from Yazid bin Abdullah bin Shakhir, who is Abu Ala, from Uthman bin Abu As, relating the same as their hadith.Hakim erred when he included it in his Mustadrak (4/219) via the route of Jareiri, from Abu Ala bin Shakhir, from him, saying, "Its isnad is sahih, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not report it."
