Muaz used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ and then go and lead his own people in prayer. One night he prayed the evening prayer with the Prophet ﷺ, then went to his people and led them, beginning with Surah al-Baqarah. A man broke off, gave the salam, then prayed alone and left.The people said to him, "Have you become a hypocrite, so-and-so?"He replied, "No, by Allah. I will go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him."He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, we are people who tend watering camels and work by day. Muaz prayed the evening prayer with you, then came and began with Surah al-Baqarah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to Muaz and said, "Are you one who drives people away? Recite such-and-such, and recite such-and-such."
كان معاذ يصلي مع النبي ﷺ ثم يأتي فيؤم قومه. فصلى ليلة مع النبي ﷺ الاول العشاء، ثم أتى قومه فأمهم، فافتتح بسورة البقرة. فانحرف رجل فسلم. ثم صلى وحده وانصرف، فقالوآله: أنافقت يا فلان؟ قال: لا والله، ولآتين رسول الله ﷺ فلأخبرنه. فأتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله! إنا أصحاب نواضح نعمل بالنهار، وإن معاذا صلى معك العشاء، ثم أتى فافتتح بسورة البقرة. فأقبل رسول الله ﷺ على معاذ فقال: أفتان أنت؟ اقرأ بكذا. واقرأ بكذا.
Muslim narrated it in "the Prayer" (465) from Muhammad bin Abbad, who said, Sufyan told us, from Amr, from Jabir, and he related it. Sufyan said, I said to Amr, "Abu Zubayr told us, from Jabir, that he said, 'Recite "By the sun and its brightness" [Shams 91:1], and "By the night when it covers" [Layl 92:1], and "Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Ala 87:1].'" Amr said, "Something like that." He narrated it from Qutayba bin Saeed, from Layth, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, and he related it.Bukhari narrated it in "the Adhan" (705) by way of Shuba, who said, Muharib bin Dithar told us, he said, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari say, A man came with two water-carrying camels, night having already fallen, and he found Muaz praying. He left his camels and came to join Muaz, who recited Surah Baqarah or Surah Nisa. The man left, and it reached Muaz that the man had spoken ill of him, so he came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained to him about Muaz. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Muaz, are you causing dissension, or, are you a source of trial (he said it three times). Why did you not pray with "Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Ala 87:1], "By the sun and its brightness" [Shams 91:1], "By the night when it covers" [Layl 92:1]? For behind you pray the elderly, the weak, and those with pressing needs."Bukhari said, "Saeed bin Masruq, Masaar, and Shaybani corroborated him," meaning all of them transmitted from Muharib the core of the hadith. Shuba himself has no need for corroboration, but since the wordings of the hadith varied, there was a need for corroboration regarding the core of the story. Likewise, Muslim narrated it through another route from Jabir.
