It is reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he led the dawn prayer and recited Surah ar-Rum, but his recitation became confused. After completing the prayer, he said, "What is the matter with certain people who pray with us yet do not perform ablution properly? It is they who cause the Quran to become confused for us."
عن النبي ﷺ أنه صلى صلاة الصبح، فقرأ الروم فالتبس عليه. فلما صلى قال: ما بال أقوام يصلون معنا لا يحسنون الطهور، فإنما يلبس علينا القرآن أولئك.
Nasai (947) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, who said, Sufyan informed us, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Shabib bin Abu Rawh, from a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he mentioned it.Imam Ahmad (23072) also narrated it from Waki, from Sufyan, with his chain, similarly, adding to it, "Whoever attends the prayer with us should perform the purification well." He also narrated it through the route of Shubah from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr in abridged form (23125).Its chain is hasan, due to the discussion surrounding Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, for Ahmad graded him daif, while Nasai said, "There is no harm in him," and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) narrated from him. The chain also contains Shabib bin Abu Rawh, from whom a group narrated, including Hurayz bin Uthman. Abu Dawud said, "The shaykhs of Hurayz are all trustworthy." Ibn Hibban also declared him trustworthy, so someone like him has his hadith graded hasan, and the anonymity of the companion does not harm the narration, since all the companions are of upright character.It has been said that he is Aghar Muzani. Bazzar narrated it, in Kashf Astar (477), from Ziyad bin Yahya Hassani, who said, Muammal narrated to us, who said, Shubah narrated to us, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Shabib bin Abu Rawh, from Aghar Muzani, and he mentioned the hadith. Muammal is Ibn Ismail.Haythami said in Majma (2/119), "He is trustworthy, though it has been said that he made many errors." So perhaps he erred in naming the companion.
