He said, "In every prayer there is recitation. Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited aloud to us, we recite aloud to you, and whatever he recited silently, we recite silently to you. If you do not add anything beyond the Mother of the Quran, it suffices, and if you add more, that is better."
في كل صلاة يقرأ، فما أسمعنا رسول الله ﷺ أسمعناكم، وما أخفى عنا أخفينا عنكم، وإن لم تزد على أم القرآن أجزت، وإن زدت فهو خير.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (772), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (396-42), both from the hadith of Ismail bin Ibrahim, who said, Ibn Jurayj informed us, who said, Ata informed me, that he heard Abu Hurairah say, and he mentioned something similar. Muslim added, a man said to him, "What if I do not add to Umm Quran?" He said, "If you add to it, that is better, and if you stop at it, that is sufficient for you."This addition suggests that it is mawquf, but Muslim narrated it from the hadith of Abu Usama, from Habib bin Shaheed, who said, I heard Ata narrating from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no prayer without recitation." Abu Hurairah said, "Whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared openly, we have declared openly to you, and whatever he kept quiet about, we have kept quiet about for you." This suggests that everything Abu Hurairah said carries the ruling of being attributed to the Prophet. What is meant by recitation here is the recitation of Fatihah, without which prayer is not valid, while whatever is added beyond it is recommended. This is what the sahih hadiths indicate, and this is the position of the majority of the people of knowledge, Malik, Shafii, Ahmad, and others.
