Azami 1967

Malik narrated it in his chapter on prayer (44) from Ibn Shihab, from Ibn Ukaymah Laythi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related the hadith. From Malik, Abu Dawud (826), Tirmidhi (312), and Nasai (919) also narrated it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan." I say, and it is indeed so. "Ukaymah," in the diminutive form, refers to a man named "Umara," though some say "Amr." Yahya bin Saeed and Ibn Hibban both regarded him as reliable, and Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is sound, and he is accepted."Ibn Majah narrated it through two paths, Sufyan bin Uyayna (848) and Maamar (849), both from Zuhri with the same wording, except that Sufyan did not mention "so the people stopped reciting..." Abu Dawud (827) also narrated it through Sufyan, from Zuhri, who said, "I heard Ibn Ukaymah relating to Saeed bin Musayab, saying, 'I heard Abu Hurairah say,'" and in it he added, "We think it was the dawn prayer."The narrators transmitting from Zuhri differed regarding the statement "so the people stopped," whether it was part of Abu Hurairah's words or part of Zuhri's own words. Maamar reported from Zuhri, "Abu Hurairah said, 'So the people stopped.'" But Uzai narrated from Zuhri, saying that Zuhri himself said, "So the Muslims took heed from that, and they stopped reciting along with him in whatever he recited aloud."ﷺAbu Dawud said, "I heard Muhammad bin Yahya bin Faris say, 'The statement "so the people stopped" is part of the words of Ibn Shihab Zuhri.'" Bukhari likewise concluded that this was part of Zuhri's own words, as Abu Dawud stated, and this is also the conclusion reached by Bayhaqi in Marifat Sunan and in Sunan al-Kubra (2/157-159), because Abu Hurairah himself used to give the ruling that one should recite the Fatihah silently behind the imam, whether the imam recited aloud or quietly.
