I came to the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca while he was inside his red leather tent. Bilal came out and gave the call to prayer, and I followed his mouth as it turned this way and that. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out wearing a red garment, a Yemeni striped wrap of Qatari cloth.Musa said in his version, "I saw Bilal come out to al-Abtah and give the call to prayer. When he reached, 'Come to prayer, come to success,' he turned his neck right and left without rotating his body. Then he went back inside and brought out the Anazah," and he continued the rest of the hadith.
Abu Dawud (520) narrated it from Musa bin Ismail, who said, Qays, meaning Ibn Rabi, narrated to us. Another chain, Muhammad bin Sulayman Anbari narrated to us, Waki narrated to us, from Sufyan, both of them from Awn bin Abu Juhayfa, from his father, and he related the hadith.I say, the first chain contains Qays bin Rabi, whom Ali bin Madini, Nasai, Daraqutni, and others declared daif. However, Sufyan corroborated him except in his statement, "and he did not turn around," which has been established in other narrations.Tirmidhi (197) and Hakim (1/202) narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, from Sufyan, and it contains, "I saw Bilal giving the adhan and turning, following his mouth here and there, with his two fingers in his ears." Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." Hakim said, sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs. What is meant by this is the twisting of the neck to the right and left, as Nasai (2/12) mentioned it by saying, he turns to the right and to the left. As for inserting the two fingers into the ears, this is sahih.Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Abu Juhayfa is hasan sahih, and it is acted upon among the people of knowledge, who recommend that the muezzin insert his two fingers into his ears during the adhan. Some scholars said, and likewise during the iqamah, he inserts his two fingers into his ears, and this is the view of Uzai." End of quote.I say, the basis of the hadith of Abu Juhayfa is in the Sahihayn, and its mention has preceded in the chapter on purification, in the section on using the leftover water of wudu, except that Bukhari did not present the full wording of the hadith, just as neither he nor Muslim mentioned the insertion of the two fingers into the ears.
