Safina reported that he set out on a ship in which Uqba bin Amir al-Juhani was also a passenger. When the time for one of the prayers arrived, we asked him to lead us, saying, "You are the most deserving of us to do so, for you are the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."But he refused and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever leads people in prayer and performs it correctly, the prayer counts for him and for them. But whoever falls short in any part of it, the burden is upon him, not upon them.'"
أنه خرج في سفينة فيها عقبة بن عامر الجهني، فحانت صلاة من الصلوات، فأمرنا أن يؤمنا، وقلنا له: إنك أحقنا بذلك، أنت صاحب رسول الله ﷺ فأبى فقال: إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من أم الناس فأصاب فالصلاة له ولهم، ومن انتقص من ذلك شيئا فعليه، ولا عليهم.
Abu Dawud (580) and Ibn Majah (983) both narrated it through Abdul-Rahman bin Harmala, from Abu Ali Hamdani, who then related the hadith. Its chain is hasan, for Abdul-Rahman bin Harmala's narrations are hasan when he does not err, and he is among the men of Muslim. Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is recorded but not relied upon." Ibn Saad said, "He was trustworthy and narrated many hadiths."Abu Ali is Thumama bin Shufayy. Nasai and others considered him trustworthy, and he is among the men of Muslim. Hakim also narrated it (2101) through Abdul-Rahman bin Harmala, and graded it sahih.
