Azami 1900

Imam Ahmad narrated it (16896), saying, Yahya (Ibn Saeed) told us, from Muhammad bin Amr, who said, my father told me, from my grandfather, who said, and then he related the hadith. Muhammad bin Amr is Ibn Alqama Laythi, who is truthful (saduq), and his father Amr bin Alqama bin Waqqas Laythi Madani is "acceptable" (maqbul). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat (5/174). This is how Ahmad narrated it in detail.Nasai narrated it (677) from Mujahid bin Musa and Ibrahim bin Hasan Maqsami, who both said, Hajjaj told us, Ibn Jurayj said, Amr bin Yahya informed me, that Isa bin Umar informed him, from Abdullah bin Alqama bin Waqqas, from Alqama bin Waqqas, who said, I was with Muawiya when his muezzin gave the adhan. Muawiya repeated what the muezzin said, until when he said, "Come to prayer," he said, "There is no power and no strength except with Allah." Then when the muezzin said, "Come to success," he said, "There is no power and no strength except with Allah." After that he repeated what the muezzin said just as before. Then he said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying the same thing. End of narration.Abu Dawud Tayalisi narrated it (1052), saying, Hisham (Dastawai) told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim Taymi, from Isa bin Talha, who said, We were with Muawiya when the caller announced the prayer. Muawiya said the same as him, then he said, "This is how I heard your Prophet ﷺ."Bukhari included it in the Book of Adhan (612), from Muaz bin Fadala, who said, Hisham told us the same narration, in which he said, He said the same, up to his words, "and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," but he did not mention the hawqala (the phrase "there is no power and no strength except with Allah") in it. Bukhari then narrated it from Ishaq bin Rahawayh, who said, Wahb bin Jareer told us, Hisham told us, from Yahya, similarly, meaning he did not mention the hawqala in it either. Bukhari then said, Yahya said, and one of our brothers told me that he said, when the muezzin said, "Come to prayer," Muawiya said, "There is no power and no strength except with Allah," and said, "This is how I heard your Prophet ﷺ say it."Bukhari's statement, "Yahya said" (meaning Yahya bin Abu Kathir), apparently connects to the preceding chain of Ishaq bin Rahawayh. This is a sahih chain, except that it contains an unnamed man in Yahya bin Abu Kathir's statement, "one of our brothers told me." This is also how Imam Ahmad narrated it (16828), from Ismail bin Ibrahim (known as Ibn Ulaya), who said, Hisham Dastawai informed us with his chain, up to where Yahya said, a man told us that when the muezzin said, "Come to prayer," he said, "There is no power and no strength except with Allah."However, Ibn Khuzayma narrated it (414) through the route of Ibn Ulaya, with the same chain, and made the phrase "and there is no power and no strength except with Allah" part of the continuous chain, without mentioning Yahya bin Abu Kathir's statement, "a man told me." It appears there is an omission by the copyist here. Ibn Hajar was puzzled in trying to identify this unnamed man who dropped out of the chain, and he did not settle on anything definite.If we take this unnamed man as corroborating what Amr bin Alqama Laythi mentioned, then the mention of the hawqala in Muawiya's hadith would be hasan li-ghayrihi, with the possibility that this unnamed man is Amr bin Alqama himself, as al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) said, or his brother Abdullah bin Alqama. A narrator like this poses no problem when used for corroboration.
