The Prophet ﷺ led the night prayer toward the end of his life. After giving the salam, he stood and said, "Do you see this night of yours? At the turn of one hundred years from now, no one currently living on the face of the earth will remain."The people misunderstood the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ words and began to circulate various accounts about the meaning of "one hundred years." The Prophet ﷺ only meant, by saying "no one currently living on the face of the earth will remain," that this generation would pass away by then.
صلى النبي ﷺ صلاة العشاء في آخر حياته، فلما سلم قام النبي ﷺ فقال: أرأيتم ليلتكم هذه، فإن رأس مائة سنة لا يبقى ممن هو اليوم على ظهر الأرض أحد فوهل الناس في مقالة رسول الله ﷺ إلى ما يتحدثون من هذه الأحاديث عن مائة سنة. وإنما قال النبي ﷺ: لا يبقى ممن هو اليوم على ظهر الأرض يريد بذلك أنها تخرم ذلك القرن.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Prayer Times (601), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2537), both from the hadith of Zuhri, who said, "Salim bin Abdullah and Abu Bakr bin Sulayman informed me that Abdullah bin Umar said," then he related the hadith. Bukhari also related it in the Book of Knowledge, the chapter on staying up at night discussing knowledge (116). The hadith will be repeated in the Virtues of the Companions.
