The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once delayed the evening prayer until people had fallen asleep and woken up, then fallen asleep and woken up again. Umar bin Khattab stood and called out, "The prayer!"Ata said that Ibn Abbas reported, "Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ came out, and it is as if I can see him now, with water dripping from his head and his hand placed on one side of it. He said, 'Were it not that it would be too difficult for my community, I would have ordered them to pray it at this hour.'"
أعتم رسول الله ﷺ ذات ليلة العشاء، قال: حتى رقد ناس واستيقظوا، ورقدوا واستيقظوا فقام عمر بن الخطاب فقال: الصلاة فقال عطاء: قال ابن عباس: فخرج نبي الله ﷺ كأني أنظر إليه الآن، يقطر رأسه ماء واضعا يده على شق رأسه قال: لولا أن يشق على أمتي لأمرتهم أن يصلوها كذلك.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Prayer Times (571), and Muslim in the Book of Mosques (642), both from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Ibn Jurayj informed me, saying, I said to Ataa, "At what time would you prefer that I pray the isha, which people call the atamah, whether leading others or alone?" He said, I heard Ibn Abbas say... and he mentioned it.The hadith is also found in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq (2112) by this route. He also reported it from Muhammad bin Muslim, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ataa, who said, I heard Ibn Abbas say the same.
