I said, "Messenger of Allah, my father used to maintain ties of kinship and do such and such."He replied, "Your father sought something and attained it," meaning a good reputation.
قلت: يا رسول الله إن أبي كان يصل الرحم ويفعل كذا وكذا، قال: إن أباك أراد أمرا فأدركه يعني الذكر.
Ahmad (18262), Tabarani in Al-Kabir (17/104), and Ibn Hibban (332) all narrated it through the route of Shubah, from Simak bin Harb, who said, "I heard Murri bin Qatari say, 'I heard Adi bin Hatim,'" and then he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Simak, for his hadith is hasan. As for Murri bin Qatari, although Simak is the only one who narrated from him, Ibn Main still deemed him reliable, as recorded in the history of Uthman Darimi from him (766). As for Hafiz's statement about him, "acceptable," this may be because he found nothing about him except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Al-Thiqat.
