He delayed the prayer one day, so Urwa bin Zubayr came in to see him and informed him that Mughira bin Shuba had once delayed the prayer while he was in Kufa. Abu Masud al-Ansari came in to see him and said, "What is this, Mughira? Do you not know that Jibreel came down and prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he prayed and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then he said, 'With this I have been commanded'?"Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said, "Be sure of what you are reporting, Urwa. Was it really Jibreel who established the times of prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Urwa replied, "That is how Bashir bin Abu Masud al-Ansari used to narrate it from his father."
Malik narrated it in the chapter on the times of prayer (1), from Ibn Shihab, from Umar bin Abdul-Aziz. Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the times of prayer (521), and Muslim in the chapter on mosques (610), both through the route of Malik, with his chain of transmission. The two Shaykhs, Bukhari (3221) and Muslim, narrated it through the route of Layth bin Saad, from Ibn Shihab, that Umar bin Abdul-Aziz delayed Asr somewhat, and at the end of it he said, counting five prayers on his fingers. Ibn Shihab heard this account from Urwa bin Zubayr, as his student Shuayb narrated it from him. See Sahih Bukhari (4007).Abu Dawud said, "This hadith was narrated from Zuhri by Mamar, Malik, Ibn Uyayna, Shuayb bin Abu Hamza, Layth bin Saad, and others, but they did not mention the time at which he prayed, nor did they explain it."I say, as for Abu Dawud (394) himself, he narrated it with the explanation, through the route of Usama bin Zayd Laythi, that Ibn Shihab informed him that Umar bin Abdul-Aziz was sitting on the pulpit and delayed Asr somewhat, so Urwa bin Zubayr said to him, "Indeed Jibreel informed Muhammad ﷺ of the time of prayer." Umar said to him, "Be careful what you are saying." Urwa said, "I heard Bashir bin Abu Masud say, I heard Abu Masud Ansari say, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Jibreel
descended and informed me of the time of prayer, so I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him,'" counting five prayers on his fingers."I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray Dhuhr when the sun had passed its zenith, and sometimes he would delay it when the heat was intense. I saw him pray Asr while the sun was still high and white, before yellowness had entered it, so that a man would finish the prayer and reach Dhul-Hulayfa before the sun set. He would pray Maghrib when the sun went down, and he would pray the night prayer when the horizon turned dark, sometimes delaying it until the people had gathered. He prayed the dawn prayer once while it was still dark, then prayed it another time when daylight had come, and after that his prayer remained in the pre-dawn darkness until he died, and he never again returned to praying it in full daylight."This was also narrated by Nasai (495) and Ibn Majah (668), in abridged form.
