When Uthman had finished his ablution, he said, "By Allah, I am going to tell you a hadith. By Allah, were it not for a verse in the Book of Allah, I would never have told it to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No man performs his ablution, doing it well, and then prays, without being forgiven whatever came between that prayer and the one that follows it.'"Urwa said the verse he meant was "Indeed, those who conceal what We have revealed of clear proofs and guidance" through the words "and so do those who curse" [Baqarah 2:159].
Bukhari narrated it in wudu (160), and Muslim in Purification (227: 6), both of them through Ibrahim bin Saad, from Salih bin Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab Zuhri, from Urwa, from Humran, the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan, who said, and he related it.
