The Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at night at Ulat al-Jaysh, and Ayesha was with him. A necklace of hers, made of Zafar onyx, broke and fell, so the people were detained searching for that necklace until dawn began to break, and the people had no water with them.Abu Bakr became angry with her and said, "You have detained the people, and they have no water with them."Then Allah the Exalted revealed to His Messenger ﷺ the dispensation to purify oneself with clean earth. So the Muslims rose with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and struck their hands against the ground, then lifted their hands without taking any dirt with them, and wiped their faces and their arms up to the shoulders, and from the insides of their hands up to the armpits.
Abu Dawud (320), Nasai (314), and Ahmad (18322) all narrated it from the hadith of Yaqub bin Ibrahim, who said, our father narrated to us, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba narrated to me, from Ibn Abbas, from Ammar bin Yasir, and he mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is sahih, except that the description of tayammum mentioned in this hadith, if it is an action of Ammar bin Yasir himself, contradicts what has been established from him as a marfu narration, and if it is from the Prophet ﷺ, then it has been abrogated by what is established in the Sahih regarding the description of tayammum, as will come later.
