The Prophet ﷺ granted a concession to the traveler that, if he performed ablution and put on his leather socks, then later renewed his ablution after breaking it, he could wipe over them for three days and three nights, and for the resident, one day and one night.
عن النبي ﷺ أنه رخص للمسافر- إذا توضأ ولبس خفيه، ثم أحدث وضوءا- أن يمسح ثلاثة أيام ولياليهن، وللمقيم يوما وليلة.
Ibn Majah narrated it (556), saying, Muhammad bin Bashshar and Bishr bin Hilal Sawwaf told us, they said, Abdul-Wahhab bin Abdul-Majid told us, he said, Muhajir Abu Makhlad told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakra, from his father, and he related the hadith. Its isnad is hasan because of Muhajir Abu Makhlad, whom Abu Hatim criticized. Saji said, "He is truthful and well known," which is close to "truthful." Shafii, Khattabi, and others graded this hadith sahih. See Talkhis (1/157).Ibn Khuzayma related it in his Sahih (192), and Ibn Hibban (1324), both through Abdul-Wahhab bin Abdul-Majid, with this wording, "From the Prophet ﷺ, that he permitted the traveler three days and their nights, and the resident one day and one night, when he has performed ablution and put on his socks, to wipe over them."Tirmidhi said in his Ilal al-Kabir, I asked Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, which hadith is soundest in your view regarding the time limit for wiping over the socks. He said, "The hadith of Safwan bin Assal, and the hadith of Abu Bakra is a hasan hadith." End of quote. Ilal al-Kabir (1/175–176).
