The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition, and they were struck by severe cold. When they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he instructed them to wipe over their head coverings and their footwear.
بعث رسول الله ﷺ سرية، فأصابهم البرد، فلما قدموا على رسول الله ﷺ أمرهم أن يمسحوا على العصائب والتساخين.
Abu Dawud (146) narrated it, "Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Hanbal told us, Yahya bin Saeed told us, from Thawr, from Rashid bin Saad, from Thawban," and then he mentioned it. It is also found in Musnad Ahmad (22383), and Hakim graded it sahih (1/169), saying, "Sahih according to the standard of Muslim." Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of Rashid bin Saad, since there is disagreement over whether he heard directly from Thawban. The stronger view is that he did hear from him, as Bukhari made explicit in Tarikh al-Kabir, where he said in his biographical entry, "He heard from Thawban and Yaala bin Murrah," and his explicit statement of having heard from him also appears in Adab al-Mufrad (579). His having heard from him is not implausible, since he was present at Siffin with Muawiya, and Thawban died in the year fifty-four.Abu Salam Aswad corroborated him, narrating from Thawban as recorded by Bazzar, see Kashf Astar (1/154), but its chain contains Utba bin Abu Umaya Dimashqi, of whom Ibn Hibban said, "He transmits truncated reports." See Majma al-Zawaid (1/255).As for "tasakheen," Imam Khattabi said in Ghareeb al-Hadith (2/61), "Some scholars said, tasakheen refers to anything used to warm the foot, such as a khuff, a sock, or the like."
