The Prophet ﷺ said to him during the Farewell Pilgrimage, "Call the people to silence." Then he said, "Do not return after me to disbelief, striking each other's necks."
أن النبي ﷺ قال له في حجة الوداع: استنصت الناس فقال: لا ترجعوا بعدي كفارا يضرب بعضكم رقاب بعض.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Knowledge (121), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (65), both from the hadith of Shubah, who said, Ali bin Mudrak informed me, from Abu Zura, from his grandfather Jareer, and he related it. Their wording is identical.Jareer here is Jareer bin Abdullah Bajali, who is the grandfather of Abu Zura, the narrator relating from him. That is, Abu Zura bin Amr bin Jareer bin Abdullah Bajali. As for his saying, "striking one another," the letter ba is read with a damma in the narrations, and the meaning is, do not act as the disbelievers act, imitating them in the matter of killing one another. Hafiz said this in Fath al-Bari (1/217).
