One day we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we saw him looking sorrowful. One of us said, "Messenger of Allah, may my father, mother, and wealth be sacrificed for you, why do we see you like this?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I heard a thudding sound the like of which I have never heard before. So Jibreel came to me, and I asked him about it. He said, 'That was a rock that was cast into the Fire seventy autumns ago, and only today did it reach its resting place.'"Abu Saeed said, "By the One who took the soul of our Prophet ﷺ, I never saw him laugh after that day until the earth covered him."

Ibn Abu Shayba (35286) reported it from Muhammad bin Bishr, from Harun bin Abu Ibrahim, from Abu Nadra, who said, I heard Abu Saeed Khudri say, then he related it. Harun bin Abu Ibrahim is Barbari, and his father's name was Maymun bin Ayman. He is also called Harun bin Ibrahim, and he is one of the men found in Tahdhib. Ibn Main, Abu Zura, Abu Hatim, and others deemed him trustworthy.Similar in meaning is what was reported from Abu Musa, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a stone were thrown into Hell, it would fall for seventy autumns before reaching its bottom." This was reported by Abu Yaala (7243), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (3494), and Ibn Hibban (7468), all of them by way of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Musa, from Abu Musa Ashari, who said, then he related it.Ata bin Saaib became confused in his later years, and Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed heard from him after this confusion had set in. Hannad reported it in Zuhd (251) from Abu Ahwas, and Bayhaqi reported it in Bath and Nushur (483) by way of Sulayman Taymi, both Abu Ahwas and Sulayman transmitting it from Ata bin Saaib in a similar wording. It has not been established whether the narration of Abu Ahwas or that of Sulayman came before or after his confusion.
