The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day, or one night, and there he came upon Abu Bakr and Umar. He asked, "What has brought you out of your homes at this hour?"They replied, "Hunger, Messenger of Allah."He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, the same thing that brought you out has brought me out as well. Get up."They rose with him and came to the home of one of the Ansar, but he was not there. When his wife saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said, "Welcome."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "Where is so-and-so?"She replied, "He has gone to fetch us some fresh water."Just then the Ansari man arrived, and when he looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two companions, he said, "Praise be to Allah, no one today has more honored guests than I do."He went off and brought them a cluster of dates containing unripe, dried, and fresh dates, and said, "Eat from these." Then he took up the knife to slaughter for them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Avoid the milk-producing one."So he slaughtered for them, and they ate from the sheep and from that cluster of dates, and they drank. When they had eaten and drunk their fill, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and Umar, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely be questioned about these blessings on the Day of Resurrection. Hunger drove you from your homes, and you did not return until these blessings reached you."In another narration, "Do not slaughter one that gives milk."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2038: 140), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Khalaf bin Khalifa narrated to us, from Yazid bin Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. There are other hadiths on this subject mentioned in the tafsir of Surah Takathur.
