An Arabi came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about ablution. The Prophet ﷺ showed him how to perform it three times for each part, then said, "This is the ablution. Whoever exceeds this has done wrong, transgressed, or committed injustice."
جاء أعرابي إلى النبي ﷺ فسأله عن الوضوء، فأراه ثلاثا ثلاثا، ثم قال: هذا الوضوء، فمن زاد على هذا فقد أساء أو تعدى أو ظلم.
Ibn Majah (422) narrated it, and the wording is his, along with Abu Dawud (135), Nasai (1/88), Ahmad (6684), and Ibn Khuzayma (174), all of them through Musa bin Abu Ayesha, from Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said, then he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Shuayb. Some other sources contain the addition "or less," but this addition is a rejected (munkar) one, for performing wudu once, twice, or three times is permissible without any disagreement among the scholars, and the hadiths on this subject indicate as much.
