A Jewish woman in Madinah gave birth to a boy whose eye was wiped out, raised, and protruding. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ feared that he might be the Dajjal, so he went looking for him and found him under a velvet cloak murmuring to himself. His mother noticed the Prophet's arrival and said, "Abdullah, this is Abu Qasim who has come. Come out to him."The boy emerged from under the cloak, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is wrong with her, may Allah destroy her. Had she left him alone, he would have made things clear."Then he said, "Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?"He replied, "I see truth and I see falsehood, and I see a throne upon the water."He spoke ambiguously to him. The Prophet asked, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The boy responded, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah said, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." Then he left him and went away. Then he came to him another time and found him among some palm trees of his, murmuring. His mother noticed him and said, "Abdullah, this is Abu Qasim who has come."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is wrong with her, may Allah destroy her. Had she left him alone, he would have made things clear."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hoping to hear something from his speech to determine whether he was the Dajjal or not. He said, "Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?"He replied, "I see truth and I see falsehood, and I see a throne upon the water."He asked, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The boy responded, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." The boy spoke ambiguously to him, so he left and went away. Then he came a third or fourth time, and with him were Abu Bakr and Umar bin Khattab along with a group of the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and I was with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ hurried ahead of us hoping to hear something from his speech, but his mother got to him first and said, "Abdullah, this is Abu Qasim who has come."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is wrong with her, may Allah destroy her. Had she left him alone, he would have made things clear."He said, "Ibn Sayyad, what do you see?"He replied, "I see truth and I see falsehood, and I see a throne upon the water."He asked, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The boy responded, "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." The boy spoke ambiguously to him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to him, "Ibn Sayyad, I have hidden something from you. What is it?"He said, "Dukh, dukh."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Be off, be off."Umar bin Khattab said, "Allow me to kill him, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If he is the one, you are not the one to deal with him. The one to deal with him is Isa son of Maryam ﷺ. And if he is not the one, then you have no right to kill a man under a covenant of protection."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued to fear that he was the Dajjal.
Ahmad narrated it (14955) from Muhammad bin Sabiq, who said, Ibrahim bin Tahman narrated to us, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Sabiq, for his hadith is hasan, though there is some strangeness in certain passages of the hadith.Haythami said in Majma (3/8-4), "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih." I say, this is as he said, were it not for the fact that Abu Zubayr's use of "an" (rather than a direct statement of hearing) is a concern, since he is known to obscure his sources. Hafiz bin Kathir mentioned it in Fath al-Bari (6/173), citing it as supporting evidence, and passed over it in silence, and he does not pass over something in silence unless the hadith is sahih or hasan, as he explicitly stated at the beginning of the introduction to Fath al-Bari, Hadi Sari. Perhaps he passed over it in silence because its original version is found in Sahih Muslim (2927) in abridged form, through another route, from Abu Nadra, from Jabir, though he did not give its wording, but rather referred to the wording of the hadith of Jareeri, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Saeed, which is also abridged. In the hadith there are some wordings for which I found no corroborating evidence, and for this reason Hafiz bin Kathir, after relating it from the narration of Imam Ahmad, said, "This is a very strange account." See Nihayah (1/116-117). And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
