He asked Fatimah bint Qays, the sister of Dahhak bin Qays, who was among the early emigrants, saying, "Tell me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ directly, not attributing it to anyone else."She said, "If you wish, I will do so."He replied, "Yes, please tell me."She said, "I married Ibn Mughira, who was among the finest young men of Quraysh at that time. He was killed in the early days of striving alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I became a widow, Abdul Rahman bin Awf proposed to me, along with several companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to me on behalf of his freed slave Usama bin Zayd. I had been told that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever loves me, let him love Usama.' So when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to me, I said, 'My affair is in your hands. Marry me to whomever you wish.'He said, 'Move to the house of Umm Sharik.' Now Umm Sharik was a wealthy woman from the Ansar who spent generously in the cause of Allah, and guests would stay with her.I said, 'I will do so.'Then he said, 'Do not do that. Umm Sharik has many guests, and I would not like your head covering to fall off, or your garment to lift from your shins so that the people see something of you that you would dislike. Rather, move to the house of your cousin Abdullah bin Amr bin Umm Maktum.' He was a man from Banu Fihr, the Fihr of Quraysh, the very clan she belonged to. So I moved to his house. When my waiting period ended, I heard the call of the announcer, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, calling out, 'The prayer is gathering!' So I went out to the mosque and prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I was in the row of women that was nearest to the backs of the men. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he sat on the pulpit, smiling, and said, 'Let every person remain in his place of prayer.' Then he said, 'Do you know why I have gathered you?'They said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'He said, 'By Allah, I have not gathered you out of any desire or fear, but I have gathered you because Tamim al-Dari, who was a Christian man, came and gave his pledge of allegiance and accepted Islam, and he told me a story that agreed with what I had been telling you about the Messiah, the Dajjal. He told me that he sailed in a ship at sea with thirty men from Lakhm and Judham, and the waves tossed them about for a month at sea. Then they landed at an island in the sea at sunset. They sat in the small boats of the ship and entered the island, where they were met by a beast covered in thick hair, so much so that they could not tell its front from its back due to the abundance of hair. They said, 'Woe to you! What are you?'It said, 'I am al-Jassasah.'They said, 'And what is al-Jassasah?'It said, 'People, go to this man in the monastery, for he is most eager for your news.'He said, "When it named a man for us, we feared it might be a she-devil. So we hurried off and entered the monastery, and there we found the largest human being we had ever seen in form, and the most tightly bound, his hands fastened to his neck and the area between his knees and ankles bound in iron.We said, 'Woe to you! What are you?'He said, 'You have been able to learn of me, so tell me, what are you?'They said, 'We are people from the Arabs. We sailed in a ship at sea, but we encountered the sea when it raged, and the waves tossed us about for a month. Then we landed at this island of yours. We sat in the small boats and entered the island, where we were met by a beast covered in thick hair, so thick that we could not tell its front from its back. We said, "Woe to you! What are you?" It said, "I am al-Jassasah." We said, "And what is al-Jassasah?" It said, "Go to this man in the monastery, for he is most eager for your news." So we came to you in haste, terrified of it, fearing it might be a she-devil.'He said, 'Tell me about the palm trees of Baysan.'We said, 'About what concerning them do you ask?'He said, 'I am asking whether their palms bear fruit.'We said to him, 'Yes.'He said, 'They are about to stop bearing fruit.'He said, 'Tell me about the lake of Tiberias.'We said, 'About what concerning it do you ask?'He said, 'Is there water in it?'They said, 'It has abundant water.'He said, 'Its water is about to disappear.'He said, 'Tell me about the spring of Zughar.'They said, 'About what concerning it do you ask?'He said, 'Is there water in the spring? And do its people cultivate with the water of the spring?'We said to him, 'Yes, it has abundant water, and its people cultivate from its water.'He said, 'Tell me about the prophet of the unlettered people, what has he done?'They said, 'He has come out of Mecca and settled in Yathrib.'He said, 'Have the Arabs fought him?'We said, 'Yes.'He said, 'How did he deal with them?'We told him that he had prevailed over the Arabs around him and they had obeyed him.He said to them, 'Has that happened?'We said, 'Yes.'He said, 'It is better for them to obey him. And I will tell you about myself. I am the Messiah, and soon I will be granted permission to come out. So I will come out, and I will travel through the earth, leaving no town except that I will descend upon it within forty nights, except for Mecca and Taybah, both of which are forbidden to me. Whenever I try to enter one of them, an angel meets me with a drawn sword in his hand, blocking me from it. And at every pass into them are angels guarding them.'"She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, striking the pulpit with his staff, 'This is Taybah, this is Taybah, this is Taybah,' meaning Medina. 'Did I not tell you this before?'The people said, 'Yes.''Indeed, the account of Tamim pleased me, for it agreed with what I had been telling you about him, and about Medina and Mecca. He is in the Sea of Syria or the Sea of Yemen. No, rather he is from the direction of the east. He is from the direction of the east. He is from the direction of the east,' and he gestured with his hand toward the east."She said, "I memorized this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Tribulations and the Signs of the Hour (2942) through several routes from Abdul-Warith bin Abdul-Samad bin Abdul-Warith, who said, my father narrated to us, from my grandfather, from Husayn bin Zakwan, who said, Ibn Burayda narrated to us, who said, Amir bin Sharahil Shaybi narrated to me, and he then related the hadith. As for his saying "the Jassasah," it was given this name because it spies out news for Dajjal. As for his saying "it is in the Sea of Sham," this means that the Prophet ﷺ first thought it was in the Sea of Sham, then thought it was in the Sea of Yemen, and then learned through revelation that it lay toward the east. The island mentioned may well be located in the Arabian Gulf, since it lies east of Madinah and is close to Khurasan, from which Dajjal will emerge, as has been established in other hadiths. The hadith indicates that Dajjal is a created being who is imprisoned, awaiting permission to emerge and spread his tribulation across the inhabited earth. There is no basis for denying this, for Allah is capable of all things.
