The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Dajjal one morning, sometimes lowering his voice and sometimes raising it, until we thought he was hiding among the palm trees. When we went to him later, he noticed this in us and asked, "What is the matter with you?"We said, "Messenger of Allah, you mentioned Dajjal this morning, lowering and raising your voice, until we thought he was among the palm trees."He said, "It is not Dajjal that I fear most for you. If he comes out while I am among you, I will be the one to contend with him on your behalf. But if he comes out when I am no longer with you, then each man must contend with him on his own, and Allah is my deputy over every Muslim. He is a young man with very curly hair and a defective eye. I liken him to Abd al-Uzza bin Qatan. Whoever among you reaches him should recite over him the opening verses of Surah al-Kahf. He will appear on a road between Syria and Iraq, wreaking havoc to the right and to the left. Servants of Allah, hold firm."We asked, "Messenger of Allah, how long will he remain on the earth?"He said, "Forty days. One day will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of his days will be like your normal days."We asked, "Messenger of Allah, on the day that is like a year, will the prayers of one day suffice us?"He said, "No, estimate the times accordingly."We asked, "Messenger of Allah, how swiftly will he move through the earth?"He said, "Like rain driven by the wind. He will come to a people, call them, and they will believe in him and respond to him. He will then command the sky to rain and it will rain, and command the earth to bring forth produce and it will do so. Their grazing animals will return to them in the evening with their humps higher than ever, their udders fuller, and their flanks more swollen. Then he will come to another people and call them, but they will reject his words. He will turn away from them, and they will wake up in drought, with nothing of their wealth in their hands. He will pass by ruins and say to them, 'Bring out your treasures,' and the treasures will follow him like swarms of bees. Then he will summon a young man in the prime of life and strike him with a sword, cutting him into two pieces with the distance of an archer's shot between them. Then he will call him, and the youth will come forward, his face beaming and laughing. While he is doing all this, Allah will send Isa, son of Maryam, who will descend at the white minaret east of Damascus, wearing two saffron-dyed garments, with his hands placed on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, water will drip down, and when he raises it, droplets like pearls will roll off. No disbeliever who breathes the scent of his breath will fail to die, and his breath reaches as far as his sight reaches. He will pursue Dajjal until he catches him at the gate of Ludd and kills him. Then Isa, son of Maryam, will come to a people whom Allah has protected from Dajjal. He will wipe their faces and tell them of their ranks in Paradise. While he is doing this, Allah will reveal to Isa, 'I have brought forth servants of Mine whom no one has the power to fight. So take My servants safely to the mountain of Tur.'Allah will then send forth Yajuj and Majuj, and they will come swarming down from every height. The first of them will pass by the Lake of Tiberias and drink everything in it, and the last of them will pass by and say, 'There was once water here.'Allah's Prophet Isa and his companions will be besieged, until the head of an ox will be more valuable to one of them than a hundred Dinars are to one of you today. Allah's Prophet Isa and his companions will turn to Allah in supplication, and Allah will send a worm into the necks of Yajuj and Majuj, and they will all die together as if from a single death. Then Allah's Prophet Isa and his companions will descend to the earth, and they will not find a single hand's span of ground that is not filled with the stench of their corpses. Allah's Prophet Isa and his companions will turn to Allah in supplication, and Allah will send birds with necks like those of camels, which will carry the corpses away and cast them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain that will spare neither a house of clay nor a tent of hair, and it will wash the earth until it is left like a polished mirror. Then it will be said to the earth, 'Bring forth your fruits and restore your blessing.' On that day a group will eat from a single pomegranate and find shade beneath its rind. Milk will be so blessed that a single milch camel will be enough for a large group of people, a single milch cow will be enough for a tribe, and a single milch sheep will be enough for an entire clan. While they are in this state, Allah will send a pleasant wind that will take them under their armpits, and it will take the soul of every believer and every Muslim. Only the worst of people will remain, fornicating openly like donkeys, and upon them the Hour will come."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Tribulations and Signs of the Hour (2937) through several routes, including from Muhammad bin Mihran Razi (and this is his wording), from Walid bin Muslim, who said, "Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir told me," who said, "Yahya bin Jabir Tai, the judge of Hims, told me," who said, "Abdul-Rahman bin Jubayr told me," from his father Jubayr bin Nufayr Hadrami, that he heard Nawas bin Saman Kilabi, and he related the hadith. He also narrated it from Ali bin Hajar Saadi, who said, "Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir and Walid bin Muslim told us." Ibn Hajar said, "The wording of one of them became mixed with the wording of the other," from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, with this chain, similar to what we have already mentioned. He added, after the words "There was once water here," the following, "Then they travel on until they reach the Mountain of Khamar, which is the mountain of Bayt al-Maqdis, and they say, 'We have killed everyone on earth, come let us kill those in heaven.' So they shoot their arrows toward the sky, and Allah sends their arrows back to them stained with blood."Nawas bin Saman was from Rabia, of Kilab. His father, Saman bin Khalid, came to visit the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for him and married his sister. But when she came before the Prophet, she said she sought refuge in Allah from him, so he left her, and she became known as the Kilabiyyah. His words, "If he emerges while I am among you, then I will be his adversary on your behalf," indicate that the Prophet warned against Dajjal just as the earlier prophets had warned against him. Then further details were revealed to him, namely that Dajjal will emerge before the Day of Resurrection and that Isa will kill him after his descent. His words, "qatat" (with two fathas), mean extremely tightly curled hair, far removed from the pleasing kind of curliness. And "tafiah," with a hamza, means having no light in it, though it has also been transmitted without the hamza, meaning "protruding," that is, raised above its natural place. And "khullah" means he will emerge from a gap between Sham and Iraq. And "aatha" comes from "al-ayth," which means corruption, or hastening in spreading it.And "O servants of Allah, stand firm" means stand firm upon Islam. These are the words of the Prophet ﷺ, warning them against the tribulation and commanding them to remain steadfast in Islam. And "forty days" equals one year, two months, and fourteen days according to our reckoning. Allah is capable of all things. And "sarihatuhum" means their livestock. And "dhura," with damma on the dhal, is the plural of "dhirwah," the highest point of a camel's hump, and it is a metaphor for fatness. And "khawasir" is the plural of "khasirah" (flank), a metaphor for being well fed.And "jazlatayn" means two pieces. And "li-ramyat al-gharad," with two fathas, refers to the target, meaning that the space between the two pieces would be measured by the distance an arrow travels toward its target. As for "mahrudatayn," it means two garments resembling something dyed with "hurd," hurd being a well known root, though it is also said to mean a garment dyed with wars and saffron, the point being to show his beauty in dress. So his words, "When he lowers his head, water drips from it," are all a metaphor for the beauty of our master Isa
. He is beautiful in his form and beautiful in his clothing, not as the Christians portray him, a shabby, ragged ascetic, sometimes covering only his private parts. And "at the gate of Ludd," with damma on the lam and doubling of the dal, is the name of a mountain or village in Palestine, and it is now a city near Bayt al-Maqdis.And "no hands" means no strength and no power. And "naghafan," with two fathas, is a worm found in the noses of camels and sheep. And "la yakun" means a house of clay does not shelter one from the water, and "madar" is hardened clay. And "al-zulfah" refers to water reservoirs, though it is also said to mean a mirror, and it has been transmitted with a qaf as a metaphor for cleanliness. And "ar-rasl," with kasra on the ra and sukun on the lam, means milk. And "al-liqhah," with the lam either voweled with fatha or kasra, means a she-camel that has recently given birth. And "al-fiam," with a hamza, on the pattern of "kitab," means a great multitude of people. And "al-fakhdh" (sub-clan) is smaller than "al-batn" (clan), and "al-batn" is smaller than "al-qabilah" (tribe). And "yataharrajun" means that men will have intercourse with women in the presence of others, as donkeys do, and "al-harj," with sukun on the ra, means intercourse. This points to the widespread prevalence of corruption and immoralities, and it has been established as sahih that "the Hour will not come except upon the worst of people."His words, "at the White Minaret east of Damascus," and in another narration, "Isa will descend at Bayt al-Maqdis," and in another, "in Jordan," the first being more sahih. And his words, "the head of an ox will be worth more to one of them," point to their poverty and destitution from the exhaustion of their provisions, as they are besieged by Yajuj and Majuj. As for what is narrated from Abu Hurairah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Hour will not come until people are struck by a rain from which no houses of clay will shelter them, and only houses of hair will shelter them from it," there is something objectionable in its wording.Ahmad narrated it (7564), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (6770), both through routes from Hammad bin Salama, from Suhayl bin Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, who related it. Its chain appears sound on the surface, but it contradicts the hadith of Nawas bin Saman regarding the story of Yajuj and Majuj, "Then Allah will send down rain upon them, from which no house of clay or hair will shelter them, and it will wash the earth until it leaves it like a polished mirror."
