Tirmidhi (39) and Ibn Majah (447) both narrated it from Ibrahim bin Saeed, who is Jawhari, who said, Saad bin Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar narrated to us, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad narrated to us, from Musa bin Uqba, from Salih the freedman of Tawama, from Ibn Abbas. The wording given is that of Tirmidhi, while the wording of Ibn Majah is, "When you rise for prayer, perform wudu thoroughly, and let the water reach between the fingers of your hands and the toes of your feet."Tirmidhi said, Hasan gharib, and its isnad is hasan because of Salih the freedman of Tawama, for he became confused in memory toward the end of his life. But Busiri said in Zawaid Ibn Majah, "Even though Salih became confused toward the end of his life, Musa bin Uqba narrated from him before that confusion set in."Hafiz, in Talkhis (1/94), transmitted that Bukhari also graded it hasan.Salih is Ibn Nabhan Madani, the freedman of Tawama (with a fatha on the ta, a sakin on the waw, followed by a hamza with a fatha). Ajli deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Adi said, "There is no harm in the narrations of the early transmitters from him, such as Ibn Abu Dhib and Ibn Jurayj."As for Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, opinions about him differ. Ajli said, "Trustworthy," and Ibn Adi said, "He is among those whose hadith is recorded." Ibn Main, Ahmad, and Nasai criticized him.The narration of Imam Ahmad (2604) will follow, from Sulayman bin Dawud Hashimi, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, which contains an addition, "When you bow in ruku, place your palms on your knees..." in the chapter on placing the palms on the knees during prayer.
