Muawiya performed ablution before the people just as he had seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform it. When he reached his head, he scooped up a handful of water with his left hand and placed it on the middle of his head until the water dripped, or was about to drip, then he wiped from the front of his head to the back, and from the back to the front.
أن معاوية توضأ للناس كما رأى رسول الله ﷺ يتوضأ، فلما بلغ رأسه غرف غرفة من ماء فتلقاها بشماله حتى وضعها على وسط رأسه، حتى قطر الماء، أو كان يقطر، ثم مسح من مقدمه إلى مؤخره، ومن مؤخره إلى مقدمه.
Abu Dawud (124) narrated it from Muammal bin Fadl Harrani, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, who said, Abdullah bin Ala told us, who said, Abul-Azhar Mughira bin Farwa and Yazid bin Abu Malik told us, and he related it.Its chain is hasan, for Muammal bin Fadl Jazari, Abu Saeed, is truthful. As for Walid bin Muslim, although he practiced tadlis, he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, just as his own teacher explicitly stated that he heard it directly from his teacher, so the suspicion of tadlis is removed. As for Abul-Azhar Mughira bin Farwa Thaqafi, he is acceptable, for no one but Ibn Hibban rated him trustworthy, but he is corroborated, as you see, by Yazid bin Abu Malik, who is Yazid bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Malik, attributed to his grandfather. Daraqutni said he is among the trustworthy narrators, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators.
