Water for ablution was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he performed wudu. He washed his hands three times, washed his face three times, then washed each forearm three times. He then rinsed his mouth and inhaled water into his nose three times, and wiped his head and his ears, both their outer and inner surfaces.
أتي رسول الله ﷺ بوضوء فتوضأ، فغسل كفيه ثلاثا، وغسل وجهه ثلاثا، ثم غسل ذراعيه ثلاثا ثلاثا، ثم تمضمض واستنشق ثلاثا، ثم مسح برأسه وأذنيه ظاهرهما وباطنهما.
Abu Dawud (121) narrated it from Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, and it is found in the Musnad (17188). He said, Abu Mughira told us, he said, Hurayz told us, he said, Abdul-Rahman bin Maysara Hadrami told us, he said, I heard Miqdam bin Mad Yakrib, and then he related the hadith.Imam Ahmad added in the Musnad, "and he washed his feet three times each." Its chain is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman bin Maysara, whom Hafiz called "acceptable" in Taqrib, but the truth is that his hadith is hasan. For Hafiz mentioned in his Tahdhib, on the authority of Abu Dawud, that he said, "The teachers of Hurayz are all trustworthy," and Ajli said, "A Levantine successor, trustworthy." End of quote. Dhahabi said in Kashif, "Trustworthy."I say, Ibn Hibban also mentioned him in Thiqat. Nawawi graded its chain hasan in Majmu (1/411), except that the oddity in this hadith is that the rinsing of the mouth occurred after the washing of the forearms, while what is known in the sahih hadiths is that it comes after the washing of the hands.In another version, Abu Dawud (122) said, Mahmud bin Khalid and Yaqub bin Kaab Antaki told us, the wording being his, they said, Walid bin Muslim told us, from Hurayz bin Uthman, from Abdul-Rahman bin Maysara, from Miqdam bin Mad Yakrib, who said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform wudu, and when he reached the wiping of his head, he placed his palms on the front of his head, then moved them until he reached the nape of his neck, then returned them to the place from which he had begun."Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but he explicitly stated the mode of transmission, as Abu Dawud mentioned, saying, Mahmud said, "Hurayz informed me," meaning that Walid bin Muslim said, "Hurayz informed me."Then Abu Dawud (123) said, Mahmud bin Khalid and Hisham bin Khalid told us, in meaning, they said, Walid told us with this same chain, he said, and he wiped his ears, their outer and inner parts. Hisham added, and he inserted his fingers into the openings of his ears. End of quote.Hisham bin Ammar followed them both. He said, Walid told us, he said, Hurayz bin Uthman told us from him, and its wording is, "He performed wudu and wiped his head and his ears, their outer and inner parts." Ibn Majah (442) narrated it from Hisham bin Ammar with this chain.Tahawi related it (1/19) from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Maymun Baghdadi, who said, Walid bin Muslim told us, he said, Hurayz bin Uthman told us with this chain, and he qualified the wiping by saying "once." The narrators of this chain are all either trustworthy or truthful.
