The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Children of Israil split into seventy-one sects, and my nation will split into seventy-two sects, all of them in the Fire except one, which is the main body of the community."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إن بني إسرائيل افترقت على إحدى وسبعين فرقة، وإن أمتي ستفترق على ثنتين وسبعين فرقة، كلها في النار إلا واحدة، وهي الجماعة.
Ibn Majah (3993) and Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (64) both narrated it, both from Hisham bin Ammar, who said, Walid bin Muslim narrated to us, who said, Abu Amr narrated to us, who said, Qatada narrated to us from Anas, and he mentioned it. Abu Amr here is Uzai, as is made explicit in the narration of Ibn Abu Asim. Its chain is hasan because of Hisham bin Ammar, for his hadith is hasan, and the discussion of him is set out at length in the section on the merits of the community of the companions.
