The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah drew the earth together for me so that I saw its eastern and western reaches, and the dominion of my nation will surely reach what was drawn together for me. I have been granted the two treasures, the red and the white. I asked my Lord for my nation that He not destroy them with a sweeping famine, and that He not empower over them an enemy from outside themselves who would violate their sanctity. My Lord said, 'Muhammad, when I decree a matter, it cannot be reversed. I grant you for your nation that I will not destroy them with a sweeping famine, and that I will not empower over them an enemy from outside themselves who would violate their sanctity, even if those from all its regions,' or He said, 'from between its regions, were to gather against them. But some of them will destroy others, and some of them will take others captive.'"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Tribulations and Signs of the Hour (2889) from Abu Rabi Ataki and Qutayba bin Saeed, both of them from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayub, from Abu Qilaba, from Abu Asma, from Thawban, and he related it. Mamar also narrated it from Ayub with this same chain, except that he made it part of the narration of Shaddad bin Aws, as found in Ahmad (17115), but the correct view is that of Hammad bin Zayd. His saying, "and I saw its easts and its wests," means that the Islamic conquests would reach from the furthest east to the furthest west, and north and south are included under the terms east and west, because the fundamental directions on the globe of the earth are two, east and west, and the existence of north and south is determined by the perspective of those who inhabit the land, not by the actual formation of the earth. This is why Allah, exalted is He, said, "Lord of the east and the west, there is no god but He, so take Him as a guardian" [Muzzammil 73:9], and He said, "Lord of the two easts and Lord of the two wests" [Rahman 55:17], and He said, "So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We are indeed able" [Maarij 70:40].
