Abu Dawud (129) and Tirmidhi (34) both narrated it, both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, "Bakr, meaning Ibn Mudar, narrated to us, from Ibn Ajlan, from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, that Rubay bint Muawwidh bin Afra informed him," and then he related it. Its isnad is hasan on account of Ibn Ajlan and his teacher, both of whom are disputed, though the two of them together make the hadith hasan.Bishr bin Mufaddal also narrated it, [saying], "Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel narrated to us, from Rubay bint Muawwidh bin Afra, who said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit us,'" and she told them that he said, "Pour out water for me for wudu." Then she described the wudu of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying of it, "He washed his hands three times, washed his face three times, rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose once, washed his arms three times each, and wiped his head twice, beginning from the back of his head then the front, and wiped both his ears, their outer and inner parts, and washed his feet three times each."Abu Dawud (126) narrated it, and the wording given is his, and Tirmidhi (33) narrated it in abridged form, mentioning only that the wiping of the head was done twice, beginning from the back of the head then the front, then relating the rest in similar fashion. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan, and the hadith of Abdullah bin Zayd is more sahih than this and has a better isnad."I say, he means by this the hadith of Malik bin Anas, from Amr bin Yahya, from his father, from Abdullah bin Zayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped his head with his hands, moving them forward then backward. He began from the front of his head, then moved them to the back of his neck, then brought them back until he returned to the place from which he had begun, then washed his feet. He narrated it in his Sunan (32) from Ishaq bin Musa Ansari, [who said], "Maen bin Isa Qazzaz narrated to us, [who said], 'Malik bin Anas narrated to us,'" and then he related it. This hadith is also found in the Muwatta through the narration of Yahya, whose sourcing was already given at the beginning of this chapter, and in this version the forward-then-backward movement is mentioned as done only once.Hafiz bin Qayyim said in Zad Mad (1/193), "He would wipe his entire head, and sometimes he would move his hands forward then backward," and upon this is based the hadith of whoever said, "He wiped his head twice." The sahih view is that he did not repeat the wiping of his head, rather, when he repeated the washing of the other limbs, he still performed the wiping of the head only once. This has come from him explicitly, and nothing contrary to it has been proven sahih from him ﷺ at all. Everything beyond this is either sahih but not explicit, such as the companion's statement, "He performed wudu three times each," and his statement, "He wiped his head twice," or explicit but not sahih, such as the hadith of Ibn Baylamani, from his father, from Umar, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever performs wudu should wash his hands three times," then said, "and wipe his head three times." This cannot be relied upon, for Ibn Baylamani and his father are both graded daif, though the father is in a somewhat better state. The same applies to the hadith of Uthman which Abu Dawud narrated, that he ﷺ "wiped his head three times." Abu Dawud said, "All the sahih hadiths about Uthman indicate that the wiping of the head is done once."I say, the hadith of Abu Dawud to which Ibn Qayyim referred is what he narrated in his Sunan (110), from Harun bin Abdullah, [who said], "Yahya bin Adam narrated to us, [who said], 'Israil narrated to us, from Amir bin Shaqiq bin Jamra, from Shaqiq bin Salama,'" who said, "I saw Uthman bin Affan wash his forearms three times each, and wipe his head three times, then he said, 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do this.'" Abu Dawud said, "Waki narrated it from Israil, and in his version he said, 'He performed wudu three times only.'" So it appears from his wording that the wiping is not included in his statement, "three times."Ibn Abdul-Hadi said in Tanqih (1/201), "I say, Ibn Mahdi, Abdul-Razzaq, Abu Ahmad Zubayri, and others narrated it from Israil, and they did not mention repetition in the wiping of the head, and this is the correct view."
