Hudhayfah said, "I asked, 'What comes after the sword?'"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "A remnant tainted by impurities, and a truce burdened with rancor."Then he continued the hadith.Qatada used to apply this to the apostasy that occurred during the time of Abu Bakr. As for "tainted by impurities," he said it means defilement. "A truce" he explained as a peace agreement. And "burdened with rancor" means lingering grudges.
قال يعني حذيفة-: قلت: بعد السيف؟ قال-يعني النبي ﷺ-: بقية على أقذاء، وهدنة على دخن. ثم ساق الحديث. قال: وكان قتادة يضعه على الردة التي في زمن أبي بكر: على أقذاء يقول: قذى، وهدنة يقول: صلح، وعلي دخن على ضغائن.
Abu Dawud (4245) narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, and it is in his Musannaf (2071). Ahmad (23429) narrated it from Maamar, from Qatada, from Nasr bin Aasim, from Khalid bin Khalid Yashkuri, and he mentioned the hadith in full as it appears in Ahmad's version, while in Abu Dawud's version there is an addition.Khalid bin Khalid Yashkuri is Sabee bin Khalid, also called Khalid bin Khalid, and its isnad is hasan from Ibn Khalid onward, and he is hasan al-hadith, as mentioned previously.
