We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Bashir was a man who held back from speaking much. Abu Thalaba Khashani came and said, "Bashir bin Saad, do you remember the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the rulers?"Hudhayfah said, "I remember his sermon."So Abu Thalaba sat down, and Hudhayfah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Prophethood will remain among you for as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it away when He wills to lift it. Then there will be a caliphate following the methodology of prophethood, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it away when Allah wills to lift it. Then there will be a biting kingship, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it away when He wills to lift it. Then there will be a tyrannical kingship, and it will remain for as long as Allah wills it to remain, then He will lift it away when He wills to lift it. Then there will be a caliphate following the methodology of prophethood.' Then he fell silent."Habib said, "When Umar bin Abdul-Aziz assumed power, and Yazid bin Numan bin Bashir was among his companions, I wrote to him with this hadith to remind him of it. I said to him, 'I hope that the Commander of the Believers,' meaning Umar, 'will come after the biting kingship and the tyrannical kingship.' My letter was brought before Umar bin Abdul-Aziz, and it pleased him and delighted him."
كنا قعودا في المسجد مع رسول الله ﷺ وكان بشير رجلا يكف حديثه، فجاء أبو ثعلبة الخشني فقال: يا بشير بن سعد أتحفظ حديث رسول الله ﷺ في الأمراء؟ فقال حذيفة: أنا أحفظ خطبته، فجلس أبو ثعلبة، فقال حذيفة: قال رسول الله ﷺ: تكون النبوة فيكم ما شاء الله أن تكون، ثم يرفعها إذا شاء أن يرفعها، ثم تكون خلافة على منهاج النبوة، فتكون ما شاء الله أن تكون ثم يرفعها إذا شاء الله أن يرفعها، ثم تكون ملكا عاضا فيكون ما شاء الله أن يكون ثم يرفعها إذا شاء أن يرفعها، ثم تكون ملكا جبرية فتكون ما شاء الله أن تكون ثم يرفعها إذا شاء أن يرفعها، ثم تكون خلافة على منهاج النبوة ثم سكت. قال حبيب: فلما قام عمر بن عبد العزيز، وكان يزيد بن النعمان بن بشير في صحابته، فكتبت إليه بهذا الحديث أذكره إياه، فقلت له: إني أرجو أن يكون أمير المؤمنين -يعني: عمر- بعد الملك العاض والجبرية، فأدخل كتابي على عمر بن عبد العزيز، فسر به وأعجبه.
Ahmad (18406) narrated it from Sulayman bin Dawud Tayalisi, who said, Dawud bin Ibrahim Wasiti told me, Habib bin Salim told me, from Numan bin Bashir, who mentioned it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Habib bin Salim, for his hadith is hasan, except for his statement, "Then there will be a caliphate following the way of prophethood." This part is shadhdh (anomalous), and the sahih hadiths contain no mention of a caliphate following the way of prophethood after the caliphate has gone and kingship has come.
