Huzaifa bin Yaman reported,

We were with Umar when he asked, "Which of you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the trials?"Some people said, "We heard him."Umar said, "Perhaps you mean the trial a man faces concerning his family and his neighbor?"They replied, "Yes."He said, "Those are wiped away by prayer, fasting, and charity. But which of you heard the Prophet ﷺ mention the trials that will surge like the waves of the sea?"Hudhayfah said, The people fell silent, so I said, "I did."Umar said, "You, may your father be praised."Hudhayfah continued, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Trials will be presented to hearts one after another like the strands of a reed mat. Any heart that absorbs them will have a black mark placed upon it, and any heart that rejects them will have a white mark placed upon it, until hearts become of two kinds. One is white like a smooth stone, and no trial will harm it as long as the heavens and the earth endure. The other is black and ash-colored like an overturned jug, recognizing no good and rejecting no evil, except what is steeped in its own desires."Hudhayfah said, And I told him that between you and those trials stands a closed door which is about to be broken.Umar asked, "Will it be broken, may you have no father? Had it been opened, perhaps it could be closed again."I said, "No, it will be broken."And I told him that the door is a man who will be killed or will die, a statement that is no fabrication.

عن حذيفة قال

كنا عند عمر، فقال: أيكم سمع رسول الله ﷺ يذكر الفتن؟ فقال قوم: نحن سمعناه فقال: لعلكم تعنون فتنة الرجل في أهله وجاره؟ قالوا: أجل، قال: تلك تكفرها الصلاة والصيام والصدقة، ولكن أيكم سمع النبي ﷺ يذكر الفتن التي تموج موج البحر، قال حذيفة: فأسكت القوم فقلت: أنا، قال: أنت لله أبوك، قال حذيفة: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: تعرض الفتن على القلوب كالحصير عودا عودا، فأي قلب أشربها نكت فيه نكتة سوداء، وأي قلب أنكرها نكت فيه نكتة بيضاء، حتى تصير على قلبين، على أبيض مثل الصفا، فلا تضره فتنة ما دامت السماوات والأرض، والآخر أسود مربادا كالكوز مجخيا لا يعرف معروفا ولا ينكر منكرا، إلا ما أشرب من هواه. قال حذيفة: وحدثته أن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا، يوشك أن يكسر، قال عمر: أكسرا لا أبا لك! لو أنه فتح لعله كان يعاد، قلت: لا بل يكسر، وحدثته أن ذلك الباب رجل يقتل أو يموت، حديثا ليس بالأغاليط.
