I asked Abu Thalaba Khashani, "Abu Thalaba, what do you say about this verse, 'you are responsible for yourselves' [Maidah 5:105]?"He replied, "By Allah, you have asked someone well informed about it. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, 'Rather, enjoin what is right upon one another and forbid one another from what is wrong, until you see stinginess obeyed, desires followed, worldly life preferred, and every person with an opinion pleased with his own opinion. Then concern yourself with yourself and leave the common people alone, for ahead of you lie days of patience, in which patience will be like grasping hot coals. Whoever acts rightly in those days will have the reward of fifty men who act as he does.'"Someone else added to what I was told. He said, "Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty of them?"The Prophet answered, "The reward of fifty of you."
سألت أبا ثعلبة الخشني فقلت: يا أبا ثعلبة! كيف تقول في هذه الآية؟ {عليكم أنفسكم} قال: أما والله لقد سألت عنها خبيرا، سألت عنها رسول الله ﷺ فقال: بل ائتمروا بالمعروف وتناهوا عن المنكر حتى إذا رأيت شحا مطاعا، وهوى متبعا، ودنيا مؤثرة، وإعجاب كل ذي رأى برأيه، فعليك- يعني بنفسك- ودع عنك العوام، فإن من ورائكم أيام الصبر، الصبر فيه مثل قبض على الجمر، للعامل فيهم مثل أجر خمسين رجلا يعملون مثل عمله. وزادني غيره. قال: يا رسول الله! أجر خمسين منهم؟ قال: أجر خمسين منكم.
(Except his saying, "like the reward of fifty men") Reported by Abu Dawud (4341), Tirmidhi (3058), and Ibn Majah (4014), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (385). All of them narrate it from the hadith of Utba bin Abu Hakeem, who said, Amr bin Jariyah Lakhmi narrated to me, who said, Abu Umaya Shabani narrated to me, and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib." Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Jariyah, from whom two narrators transmitted, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, and because of his teacher Abu Umaya Shabani, from whom a group of narrators transmitted, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators as well.As for his saying, "for the one who acts among them there is a reward like that of fifty men," this is munkar, for it has no basis to support it. Something of similar meaning has been reported from Anas bin Malik, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A time will come upon the people when the one among them who holds fast to his religion will be like one grasping a burning coal." Reported by Tirmidhi (2260) and Ibn Adi (5/1711), both from the hadith of Ismail bin Musa Fazari, the grandson of Suddi's daughter, from Kufa, who said, Umar bin Shakir narrated to us, from Anas, and he related it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith from this route, and Umar bin Shakir is a Basran shaykh from whom more than one scholar has narrated." I say, Umar bin Shakir is daif. Abu Hatim said, "He is daif, he narrates munkar reports from Anas." Ibn Adi said, "He narrates from Anas a collection of nearly twenty hadiths, none of which are preserved."
