She was with her father at his home when he fell ill. He recovered from that illness, and Ali bin Abu Talib was then in Basra. Ali came to him at his home and stood at the door of his room, greeted him, and the old man returned the greeting.Ali said to him, "How are you, Abu Muslim?"He replied, "I am well."Ali said, "Will you not come out with me to face these people and support me?"He answered, "Yes, if you accept what I will give you."Ali asked, "And what is that?"The old man said, "Jariya, bring me my sword."She brought out a sheathed sword and placed it in his lap. He drew part of it out, then raised his head to Ali and said, "My beloved friend , your cousin, instructed me that when strife arises among the Muslims, I should take a sword of wood. This is my sword. If you wish, I will go out with it alongside you."Ali said, "We have no need for you nor for your sword."Then he turned back from the door of the room without entering.
Narrated by Tirmidhi (2203), Ibn Majah (3960), and Ahmad (20670), all of them through the route of Abdullah bin Ubayd, the muezzin of the masjid of Jurdan, from Udaysa bint Ahban, and he related it, the wording here being that of Ahmad. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, we do not know it except through the hadith of Abdullah bin Ubayd." I say, this Abdullah is trustworthy, and he has been corroborated, for Ahmad narrated it (27199) through the route of Abdul-Kabir bin Hakam Ghifari and Abdullah bin Ubayd, from Udaysa, in similar wording. The chain turns on Udaysa bint Ahban Ghifariyyah, who is a Successor and the daughter of a Companion. A number of narrators transmitted from her, and no one has spoken against her or in her favor, so her hadith is hasan, and it has in fact been corroborated.Tabarani narrated it in Mujam al-Kabir (1/273) through the route of Yahya bin Zahdam bin Harith Ghifari, from his father, from Ahban bin Sayfi, in similar wording. Yahya bin Zahdam bin Harith Ghifari is daif, but he was only impugned in his narration from his father, from Urs bin Umayrah, and Zahdam bin Harith has likewise been criticized. Both of them have entries in Lisan Mizan.Ahban bin Sayfi is also called Ahban bin Sayfi Ghifari, and it is under this name that Hafiz entered him in Taqrib.
