Abdullah bin Mughaffal saw one of his companions flicking pebbles between two fingers and said to him, "Do not flick pebbles like that, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to dislike," or he said, "used to forbid this practice, since it does not catch game nor wound an enemy, but only breaks teeth and puts out eyes."Later he saw the same man flicking pebbles again, so he said to him, "I tell you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to dislike," or "used to forbid flicking pebbles, and then I see you doing it. I will not speak a single word to you for such and such a time."
رأى عبد الله بن المغفل رجلا من أصحابه يحذف، فقال له: لا تحذف، فإن رسول الله ﷺ كان يكره أو قال: ينهى عن الحذف، فإنه لا يصطاد به الصيد، ولا ينكأ به العدو ولكنه يكسر السن، ويفقأ العين، ثم رآه بعد ذلك يحذف، فقال له: أخبرك أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يكره أو ينهى عن الحذف، ثم أراك تحذف، لا أكلمك كلمة كذا وكذا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sacrifices and Hunting (5479), and Muslim in the Book of Hunting and Sacrifices (54:1954), through multiple routes from Kahmas bin Hasan, from Abdullah bin Burayda, and he related it. The wording given here is Muslim's.Ibn Abbas said, "Do you not fear that you will be punished, or that the earth will swallow you up, for saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,' and then saying, 'So-and-so said'?"Darimi narrated it (445) with a sahih chain of transmission.
